The
skeleton of this deep sea dwelling glass sponge,
Euplectella, is a lattice of silica forming a chamber that houses
a mated pair of shrimp. The shrimp enter the chamber when they
are small and remain within its confines. When they reproduce,
their larvae migrate out of the chamber to start their own lives.
This relationship has come to symbolise marriage in some Pacific
cultures and the exquisite sponge, also known as The Venus Flower
Basket, is given as a traditional wedding gift. |

shell and are widely distributed through the Indo-Pacific and
the Caribbean which is actually pronounced "konk." Sometimes
the small tip is removed to form a mouthpiece to become a horn
which is said to be the musical instrument of mermaids and mermen
And most of all one of my favorite seafood scungilli in pasta

A
living fossil! Little has changed in the last 500 million years with these interesting creatures. They are found throughout the tropical Western Pacific and move from depths of 1500 feet to 300 feet and seem not to be affected by temperature or pressure. This squid like creature likes to munch on shrimp and other crustaceans witch they catch with there 38 or more tentacles and eat with there beak-like jaws. Jules Verne also gave Captain Nemo a submarine named the Nautilus in "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" as always our shells are cleaned and polished. |
